Tarot is a deck of 78 cards, traditionally used since the fifteenth century, originally for card games in Europe before becoming associated with divination and reflection in the eighteenth century onward. Today, most people who use tarot describe it as a tool for structured self-reflection rather than literal fortune-telling.

n

How the Deck Is Structured

n

A standard tarot deck is divided into the Major Arcana (22 cards representing significant life themes, such as The Fool or The Tower) and the Minor Arcana (56 cards divided into four suits u2014 typically Cups, Wands, Swords and Pentacles u2014 which reflect everyday situations and emotions, similar in structure to a standard card deck.

n

Your First Spread

n

Most beginners start with a three-card spread: one card for the past, one for the present, and one for the future or potential outcome. Draw each card, note your first impression, then consult a guidebook for the traditional meaning. Over time, many readers rely less on the book and more on their own associations.

n

What Tarot Is (and Isnu2019t)

n

Many practitioners believe tarot works less like prediction and more like a mirror u2014 the imagery prompts reflection on situations youu2019re already navigating. Treat any reading as one perspective to consider, not a definitive answer, especially for medical, legal or financial decisions.

n

Choosing Your First Deck

n

The Rider-Waite-Smith deck, first published in 1909, is the most widely referenced deck and the one most guidebooks are written around, which makes it a sensible starting point before branching into more stylized decks.

A Rider-Waite-Smith deck paired with a beginner-friendly companion guidebook is the most common starting combination. A simple cloth or wooden box to store your deck also helps protect the cards over time. Browse more starting points in our Tarot guide hub.
