Crystals and stones have been used decoratively and ceremonially across many cultures for thousands of years, from ancient Egyptian burial practices to traditional Chinese medicine’s use of jade. The modern “crystal healing” movement, as commonly practiced today, largely developed in the twentieth century alongside the broader New Age movement.
What Crystal Healing Is
Crystal healing is traditionally associated with the idea that different stones carry different energetic properties — calming, grounding, energizing, and so on — and that placing or wearing them can support intention-setting and mindfulness. It is important to be clear: there is no scientific evidence that crystals treat, heal or cure any medical condition, and they should never replace professional medical care.
Five Beginner-Friendly Stones
- Clear quartz — often described as an all-purpose stone, commonly used as a starting point
- Amethyst — traditionally associated with calm and rest
- Rose quartz — often incorporated into practices focused on self-compassion
- Black tourmaline — frequently used for grounding practices
- Citrine — associated in many traditions with motivation and clarity
Sourcing Thoughtfully
Crystal mining has real environmental and labor concerns in parts of the supply chain. Where possible, look for sellers who disclose their sourcing practices rather than assuming all crystals are sourced equally.
